Matriarch was made while thinking about the layered realities of womanhood. The vulnerability and strength required to mother. The labor of creating holiday magic. The devotion poured into sustaining friendships. The self-love it takes to keep making art in a world that prefers women soft and quiet. I held, too, the particular way women must absorb shame not only for our own choices but for the actions of the men beside us.
